Defendant Sentenced for Heinous Crime
A Farmington man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for engaging in sexual acts with a 14-year-old child in New Mexico. Daniel Washburn, 31, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, plead guilty to sexual abuse of a minor.
According to court records, in February 2019, Washburn engaged in a sexual act with the 14-year-old minor when he was 24 years old. The heinous crime has left the community shaken and outraged.
Washburn will serve 15 years in prison with no possibility of parole in the federal system. Following his release from prison, he will be subject to 10 years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Police Department and Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorneys Jesse Pecoraro and Mia Ulibarri-Rubin are prosecuting the case.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, made the announcement today.
The community is relieved that Washburn will be held accountable for his actions. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our children and holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
