Arizona Man Conceals Sewage Dumping in California

_SAN DIEGO – In a shocking revelation, Daniel Williams, a 67-year-old man from Littlefield, Arizona, pleaded guilty to misprison of a felony for concealing the illegal underground disposal of sewage at a recreational vehicle (RV) storage location in Holtville, California.

Between 2006 and 2015, Williams was aware that a septic leach system was installed at Dunes Toy Storage, despite lacking authorization from the EPA and a permit obtained from Imperial County that specifically prohibited the use of leach lines. Despite this knowledge, Williams concealed the existence of the underground discharge at Dunes Toy Storage and did not bring it to the attention of the authorities.

The improper waste discharge at the site resulted in hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage being released underground, posing a significant threat to public health and the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its law enforcement partners are committed to enforcing environmental laws and holding polluters accountable.

Williams is scheduled to be sentenced on August 5, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Janis L. Sammartino. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Land Management, Office of Law Enforcement, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigations Division.
