GULFPORT, MS – Dante Ladon Evans, 48, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, will spend the next 17 years and 7 months behind bars after receiving a 211-month federal sentence for trafficking methamphetamine. The sentence was handed down today in U.S. District Court, marking a significant blow to the flow of narcotics along the Gulf Coast.
The case unfolded when a routine check by Evans’ probation officer uncovered a substantial stash of drugs at his residence. Authorities discovered a staggering 1,231 grams of methamphetamine, enough to supply a significant network of users. Evans was already under supervision for a prior offense, making this latest conviction even more damning.
According to court documents, the sheer quantity of methamphetamine seized points to Evans operating as more than just a user. He was clearly involved in the distribution of the drug, profiting from the misery of others. The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), quickly established a clear intent to distribute the narcotics.
Evans initially pleaded guilty on November 6, 2023, to possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. The guilty plea likely stemmed from the overwhelming evidence gathered by the ATF and the strong prosecution mounted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Rose. The quick plea didn’t buy leniency, however, as the judge clearly signaled a zero tolerance stance towards drug trafficking.
“This sentence sends a clear message that we will relentlessly pursue and prosecute those who seek to poison our communities with dangerous drugs,” stated U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee. Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the ATF echoed this sentiment, highlighting the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking organizations. Jackson stated the ATF will continue to work tirelessly to keep these substances off the streets.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the Southern District of Mississippi. While Evans is now off the streets, authorities warn that the fight is far from over. The Grimy Times will continue to track the movements of drug traffickers and report on the efforts of law enforcement to bring them to justice. The investigation remains open to determine if Evans had any accomplices.
