Jackson Man Sentenced to Over 6 Years in Federal Prison for Trafficking Methamphetamine

U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate handed down a 75-month sentence to Michael Devell Smith, 28, of Jackson, for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation.

According to the investigation, from January 2017 to May 2017, Smith sold approximately 414 grams of methamphetamine to buyers, with the substance testing at 95-99% purity. The indictment was handed down on February 6, 2019, as part of an extensive operation targeting illegal methamphetamine distribution in central Mississippi.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Jackson Police Department, Madison Police Department, Ridgeland Police Department, and the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Chris Wansley and Keesha Middleton.

Smith was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine in addition to serving his prison sentence. He will also be under supervised release for 5 years following his release from prison.
