Kevin Marshall, Carjacking Murder, Illinois 2025

PEORIA, Ill. – Kevin Marshall, 35, of Danville, Illinois, will spend the rest of his life behind bars. On September 8, 2025, U.S. District Judge Colin S. Bruce handed down a life sentence without the possibility of parole to Marshall for the cold-blooded carjacking and murder of Daniel Walter. The sentence stems from a spree of violence and drug dealing that plagued Danville in 2020, and a determined federal investigation.

The evidence presented at Marshall’s August 2024 jury trial painted a gruesome picture. After being released from custody in January 2020, Marshall used a Taurus handgun to ambush and execute Walter at a rural Danville home on April 25, 2020. Witnesses testified that Marshall lured Walter from his truck around 4 a.m., then, in a secluded area, shot him four times at close range in the head and body. But the horror didn’t end there. Marshall returned and fired five more shots into Walter’s head and face, after he was already dead, before stealing Walter’s phone and wallet. He then spent the summer peddling methamphetamine, brazenly continuing criminal activity even as the investigation began to close in.

A federal grand jury first indicted Marshall in August 2021 on a charge of possessing a firearm as a felon. An expanded indictment followed in April 2023, adding the carjacking and murder of Walter, drug trafficking charges, and carrying a firearm during drug crimes. The trial, lasting from July 31 to August 7, 2024, revealed Marshall’s desperate attempts to obstruct justice. He allegedly ordered witnesses to delete Facebook records and pressured others to falsely claim responsibility for his actions – a blatant effort to evade accountability. Despite these efforts, the jury found him guilty on all counts.

This isn’t Marshall’s first brush with a murder conviction. In 2013, he was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Latifah Cross, also in Danville. Judge Bruce explicitly acknowledged both murders when delivering the quadruple life sentence – one for each count of conviction. The judge cited Marshall’s pattern of violence, witness tampering, and complete lack of remorse as key factors in the severe punishment. “The need to protect the public from this defendant is paramount,” Judge Bruce stated in court.

Acting U.S. Attorney Gregory M. Gilmore didn’t mince words. “The defendant’s violent murder of Daniel Walter, along with his armed distribution of dangerous drugs in our community, show a chilling disregard for human life,” Gilmore said. “Our office is dedicated to pursuing justice for victims of violence and protecting our communities from those who seek to sow harm.” The case was a collaborative effort between multiple agencies, including the Danville Police Department, Illinois State Police, and federal authorities.

Danville Chief of Police Christopher S. Yates echoed Gilmore’s sentiments, praising the teamwork that led to the conviction. “I appreciate the commitment…of Danville Police officers and detectives…in bringing closure to this case and holding Kevin Marshall accountable for his actions,” Yates stated. “We also must recognize the courage of the witnesses who stepped forward.” Marshall has been held by the U.S. Marshal’s Service since his arrest on August 3, 2021, and will now begin serving his life sentence, a small measure of justice for the victims and a warning to those who prey on the vulnerable.
