Darius D. Young, Armed Robbery, Illinois 2020

CHICAGO — In a brazen act of violence, 24-year-old DARIUS D. YOUNG has been apprehended on a federal criminal charge for the alleged armed robbery of a United Parcel Service (UPS) delivery truck in Oak Park.

The incident occurred on Aug. 21, 2020, as the UPS driver parked to make a delivery at the 1100 block of South Highland Avenue. The complaint reveals that a vehicle suddenly pulled up behind the truck, and an unseen male voice demanded the driver “get on the ground.” The startled driver observed what seemed to be a handgun in one of the robbers’ belts as YOUNG and two accomplices reportedly emptied numerous boxes from the UPS truck before making their getaway.

YOUNG, a resident of Berwyn, now faces a single count of robbery. His next appearance is set for a detention hearing on Friday at 11:00 a.m., where he will face U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheila M. Finnegan.

The charges were brought to light by John R. Lausch, Jr., the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, along with support from Emmerson Buie, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI, and LaDon Reynolds, Chief of the Oak Park Police Department.

This case is part of Operation Legend, a Justice Department initiative aimed at combatting violent crime. Under this operation, federal agencies have intensified efforts in the Chicago area, particularly focusing on firearm-related offenses.

Despite the charges, it’s crucial to remember that YOUNG is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The offense he faces carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
