RAPID CITY – In a move that signals a crackdown on narcotics trafficking, a Texas man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance in South Dakota.

Darius Neal, 24, of Corpus Christi, Texas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on March 29, 2024, for his involvement in a conspiracy that spanned from September 2020 to October 2022. The conspiracy involved Neal and five other co-conspirators who knowingly conspired and agreed with each other to intentionally distribute cocaine from Texas to Spearfish, South Dakota.

Cocaine was shipped through the U.S. Postal Service to South Dakota for the purposes of sale and distribution in the state. The investigation into the conspiracy was conducted by the Spearfish Police Department and the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian J. Murphy prosecuted the case, which resulted in Neal’s guilty plea on March 29, 2024. As part of his sentence, Neal was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and was also sentenced to three years of supervised release following his prison term.
