A Florida resident has been sentenced in federal court to two years probation and six months home confinement on his conviction of violating the CAN-SPAM ACT.
Sentenced was DeWayne Watts, 28, of Hernando, Florida, for knowingly using a protected computer to relay or retransmit multiple commercial electronic mail messages with the intent to deceive or mislead recipients.
This conviction stems from a significant computer hacking forum known as Darkode, which has been dismantled.
According to information presented to the court, Watts was one of 12 individuals charged in connection with the notorious hacking forum.
Assistant United States Attorney James T. Kitchen prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Watts, who will serve six months in home confinement as part of his two-year probation sentence.
The dismantling of Darkode marked a major blow to cybercrime, and Watts’ sentencing is another step in holding those accountable for their crimes.
