Darlington Man Sentenced to 121 Months in Federal Prison on Robbery and Gun Charges
A 24-year-old Darlington man has been sentenced to 121 months in federal prison for his role in a gunpoint robbery in 2017. Kenneth Eric Coe, Jr., also known as ‘Junior,’ was sentenced in federal court in Florence, South Carolina, for aiding and abetting Robbery of United States Government Property and aiding and abetting the Use of and Brandishing a Firearm During and in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence.
According to the evidence presented at the guilty plea hearing, Coe and another individual robbed a person having lawful charge, custody, and control of $400.00 belonging to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on March 29, 2017. The robbers used a firearm to force the victim to hand over the cash.
United States District Judge R. Bryan Harwell handed down the sentence, which includes 5 years of supervised release and $400.00 in restitution to be paid to the ATF. The case was investigated by agents of ATF, the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hartsville Police Department, and was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state and local Project CeaseFire.
Project CeaseFire is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made addressing rising violent crime a top priority, and as part of this effort, he reinvigorated PSN in October 2017.
The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to hold individuals accountable for violent crimes. The sentence handed down by Judge Harwell sends a strong message that gunpoint robberies will not be tolerated in our communities.
