Darren Ackerman, Felon in Possession of Firearms, Iowa 2023

WATERLOO, IA – Darren Ackerman, 39, of Waterloo, Iowa, is headed to federal prison for over a decade after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms. The sentencing, handed down on February 8, 2023, culminates a case rooted in a dangerous standoff with law enforcement and the discovery of a cache of stolen weapons.

The trouble began October 25, 2020, when Ackerman allegedly assaulted a victim, prompting a police response. Rather than cooperate, Ackerman barricaded himself inside a residence with a small child. Authorities were forced to breach the door, rescuing the child while simultaneously confronting a volatile situation inside. A search of the premises revealed not only narcotics, but five stolen firearms and dozens of rounds of ammunition.

Ackerman’s criminal history is extensive, riddled with prior felony convictions in Iowa for burglary, theft, and narcotics offenses. This repeat offender status significantly contributed to the severity of the sentence. United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams imposed a term of 180 months – fifteen years – along with a $100 fine and an order for restitution.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by a Federal Task Force comprised of the Waterloo Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Falls Police Department provided crucial assistance. Assistant United States Attorney Liz Dupuich prosecuted the case.

Federal authorities emphasize that Ackerman will serve the full 15-year sentence with no possibility of parole. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals awaiting transfer to a designated federal prison facility. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence.

The PSN program, recently strengthened, prioritizes fostering community trust, supporting local violence prevention organizations, and implementing strategic enforcement measures.
