Darrin S. McElhatton, Child Pornography, Wisconsin 2021

A 41-year-old Appleton man is facing the harsh reality of his crimes after being sentenced to 15 years in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography.

Darrin S. McElhatton was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge William C. Griesbach on May 20, 2021, to 180 months in federal prison after being found guilty of receiving and possessing numerous digital images and videos of child pornography.

The case was investigated by the Grand Chute Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Community Corrections. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble.

McElhatton was previously convicted in Wisconsin state courts for similar crimes involving child pornography, which Judge Griesbach noted in imposing the sentence. The judge emphasized the serious nature of the charge, McElhatton’s aggravated criminal record, and the need for just punishment.

Following his release from prison, McElhatton will spend the remainder of his life on supervised release. He will also be required to register as a sexual offender.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. The program has marshaled federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims.
