Darron Blue, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Louisiana 2024

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Darron Blue, 27, of New Orleans, is facing a substantial federal sentence after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The charge stems from an investigation following a shooting in the downtown area last October, according to court documents.

The case unfolded after New Orleans police responded to the shooting on October 1, 2023. Detectives quickly zeroed in on Blue as a suspect, obtaining both an arrest warrant and a search warrant for his residence. The search didn’t disappoint – officers recovered a Smith & Wesson Model SW40VE, a .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol, along with a stash of .40 and .45 caliber ammunition.

Blue’s prior criminal history disqualifies him from legally owning a firearm under Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 922(g)(1). This isn’t a simple paperwork issue; it’s a serious federal offense, and prosecutors are prepared to seek a harsh penalty.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced the guilty plea, signaling the Justice Department’s commitment to tackling gun violence in New Orleans. Blue now faces up to 15 years behind bars, a potential fine of $250,000.00, and up to three years of supervised release after serving his time. A mandatory $100 special assessment fee will also be applied.

Federal officials are framing the case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through coordinated law enforcement efforts and community engagement. The program, recently strengthened by the Department of Justice, emphasizes building trust with communities and focusing on strategic enforcement priorities.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Orleans Police Department worked jointly on the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Bell, of the Violent Crimes Unit, is prosecuting the case. Expect further developments as Blue awaits sentencing; this plea is just the first step in a potentially lengthy legal battle.
