Darryon M. Sutherlin, Identity Theft, Missouri 2022

ST. LOUIS – Darryon M. Sutherlin, 29, has admitted to a series of high-profile frauds, leaving a trail of financial ruin in his wake.

Sutherlin, a St. Louis resident, pleaded guilty to two counts of identity theft in U.S. District Court, where he admitted to using the stolen identity of a New Jersey resident to finance a $25,850 loan for a 2016 BMW 328i on May 26, 2022.

The loan, which was obtained with the victim’s name, Social Security number, and a fake ID, was used to purchase the luxury vehicle. Sutherlin also obtained two credit cards in the victim’s name, which he used to spend the loan funds.

In addition to the identity theft, Sutherlin was also involved in a pandemic fraud scheme. On March 23, 2021, he sought a Paycheck Protection Program loan by falsely claiming that he ran a construction business and submitting a false Form 1040 Schedule C showing bogus gross earnings.

After receiving a $20,833 PPP loan, Sutherlin immediately withdrew a large portion of the loan funds in cash and spent the remainder on personal expenses.

The investigation into Sutherlin’s activities was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, and the U.S. Secret Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Clow is prosecuting the case.

Sutherlin is scheduled to be sentenced on January 26 and faces a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years, a fine of up to $250,000, or both prison and a fine. He will also be ordered to repay his victims.
