Pine Ridge Woman Sentenced for Felony Child Abuse and Neglect
A shocking case of child abuse has come to light in South Dakota, where a woman was sentenced for intentionally starving two young children. Darshan Featherman, a 31-year-old woman from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, was convicted of Felony Child Abuse and Neglect.
Featherman was arrested and charged by a federal grand jury on December 6, 2016, for her role in starving two young children. The children, who were placed in Featherman’s custody, were severely malnourished and hospitalized on November 11, 2016, at Rapid City Regional. The attending physician described the children’s condition as the worst case of child abuse he had ever seen.
The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Megan Poppen and Sarah Collins prosecuted the case. Featherman was sentenced by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, to 10 years in custody, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
On March 7, 2018, Featherman was turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The case highlights the devastating consequences of child abuse and neglect, and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
