Daryl D. Shack, a 28-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida, pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
A loaded Beretta pistol, previously reported stolen, was found between his feet during a traffic stop on July 17, 2017, conducted by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Shack also had a baggie of cocaine in his pocket. Officers later recovered a baggie of marijuana, a knife, and an axe from the vehicle.
Shack has a previous felony conviction for armed robbery and is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law. He could face up to 10 years in federal prison, though a sentencing date has not yet been set.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Coolican.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. In October 2017, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the reinvigoration of PSN and directed all U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to develop districtwide crime reduction strategies.
In the Middle District of Florida, U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez coordinates PSN efforts. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are to be commended for their work in keeping the community safe.
This case highlights the importance of community policing and collaboration between law enforcement agencies. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing crimes while in possession of firearms.
