David Afterbuffalo, Child Sex Abuse, WA 2024

SPokane – David Afterbuffalo, 41, of Wellpinit, Washington, faced a federal judge today for his heinous crime against a child under twelve. The Eastern District of Washington’s Acting United States Attorney, Joseph H. Harrington, announced that Afterbuffalo has been sentenced to 270 months in prison followed by lifetime supervision and registration as a sex offender.

Afterbuffalo entered a guilty plea on January 10, 2017, for repeatedly molesting a child under the age of twelve, according to court documents. Senior Judge Nielsen emphasized the severity of Afterbuffalo’s actions, stating that failing to impose a significant sentence would only perpetuate more violence against young victims.

This is not Afterbuffalo’s first conviction involving sex offenses. In 1999, he was sentenced to a 20-year term for sexual intercourse without consent in Montana, and in 2013, he was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender, receiving a sentence of 366 days followed by five years of supervised release.

Harrington commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Spokane Tribal Police, and the U.S. Marshal Service for their diligent efforts in locating Afterbuffalo and ensuring justice is served. The investigation was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Project Safe Childhood, launched by the United States Department of Justice in 2006, integrates federal, state, and local resources to investigate, locate, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children. The initiative also includes training for law enforcement agents and community awareness programs.

This case was investigated by the FBI, the U.S. Marshal Service, and the Spokane Tribal Police, with prosecution handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Alison L. Gregoire and Matthew F. Duggan.
