Anthony man, David Amaya, faces consequences for his involvement in the illicit methamphetamine trade, as he was sentenced to 235 months in prison for distributing the highly addictive substance and possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.
According to court records, in July and August 2024, Amaya sold methamphetamine to a controlled buyer from a tow-behind trailer on his parents’ property in Anthony, New Mexico. This led law enforcement to obtain and execute a search warrant on August 22, 2024.
Upon executing the search warrant, agents discovered over 1.18 kilograms of methamphetamine inside the trailer, along with a makeshift bathroom structure. Additional methamphetamine was found in a clothing hamper and under the bed, as well as two firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Amaya pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Following his release from prison, he will be subject to five years of supervised release.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, made the announcement today. The Las Cruces Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, in conjunction with the Las Cruces Metro Narcotics Task Force, investigated this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Williams handling the prosecution.
Amaya, 43, will spend 235 months behind bars for his involvement in the methamphetamine trade. The harsh sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences that come with engaging in illicit activities.
There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Amaya will have to serve his full sentence before being eligible for release.
