David Campos, Network File Deletion, New Jersey 2017

A Union, New Jersey man has been caught deleting files from his former employer’s network, a crime that has cost his employer over $150,000.

David Campos, 60, pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and related activity in connection with computers. Campos was a former information technology employee for a business based in Jersey City, New Jersey.

According to court documents, Campos accessed his former employer’s network on three separate occasions in 2017. On July 25, 2017, July 28, 2017, and August 1, 2017, he deleted numerous files from the network, causing significant losses for his former employer.

The United States has reserved the right to argue that Campos’ actions resulted in losses of up to $1.5 million. The charge to which Campos pleaded guilty carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.

Campos’ sentencing is scheduled for January 22, 2019. The case was investigated by the FBI, and the government is represented by Senior Litigation Counsel Andrew Kogan and Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Herring.

Campos is represented by Michael Koribanics Esq. of Clifton, New Jersey.

U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited the special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Gregory W. Ehrie, with the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea.
