Evgeniy Doroshenko, Wire Fraud and Computer Fraud, New Jersey 2024

Newark, N.J. – A brazen Russian cyber thief has been caught selling access to victim computer networks, including a New Jersey company. Evgeniy Doroshenko, 31, of Astrakhan, Russia, was indicted on one count of wire fraud and one count of fraud and related activity in connection with computers.

According to court documents, Doroshenko worked as an ‘access broker’ from February 2019 to May 2024, using a Russian language cybercrime forum on the dark web to sell access to compromised computer systems. In January 2024, he gained unauthorized access to a Bergen County, New Jersey company’s network and offered to sell access to other cybercriminals.

Cybercrime forums like the one used by Doroshenko are online hotbeds of illicit activity, where hackers peddle stolen data and compromised networks. The indictment alleges that Doroshenko’s scheme netted him significant profits, which he laundered through his cybercrime forum.

The charges against Doroshenko carry serious penalties: up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for wire fraud, and up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for computer fraud. Assistant U.S. Attorney David E. Malagold is leading the prosecution.

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Secret Service, with U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger crediting the agencies for their work in uncovering Doroshenko’s scheme. The indictment is a major blow to the global cybercrime underworld, where ‘access brokers’ like Doroshenko have long been a thorn in the side of law enforcement.

The charges against Doroshenko are merely allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, if convicted, he faces a significant prison sentence and financial penalties. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by cybercrime, and the need for law enforcement to remain vigilant in the face of emerging threats.
