FRESNO, Calif. – A Bakersfield man has confessed to being a key cog in a sprawling drug trafficking operation that stretched across the border into Mexico. David Delgado Gonzalez, 38, pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to distribute and possess methamphetamine and fentanyl, according to federal prosecutors. Gonzalez, known on the streets as “Spider,” now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars.
Court documents reveal that between September 2020 and March 2021, Gonzalez worked alongside Omar Alberto Navarro, 38, of Arvin, to import methamphetamine from Mexico and distribute it throughout the Eastern District of California. The operation involved receiving narcotics from “load cars,” stashing them, and pushing the product to street-level dealers. On October 29, 2020, Gonzalez personally delivered approximately 6 pounds of methamphetamine to Scott Gordon James, 47, of Chico, in Bakersfield, collecting $6,200 for the deal. James is currently facing related charges.
The bust came to a head on March 26, 2021, when authorities raided a Bakersfield storage unit linked to Gonzalez, finding another 4 pounds of methamphetamine intended for distribution. During a simultaneous search of Gonzalez’s residence, investigators seized three unserialized 9mm handguns, which Gonzalez has agreed to forfeit as part of his plea deal. This wasn’t a small-time operation; Gonzalez was deeply embedded in a large-scale criminal enterprise.
Gonzalez is one of nine defendants charged in a series of indictments stemming from the Navarro-led conspiracy. Also facing charges are Daniel Armendariz Mercado, 42; Miguel Angel Martinez, 27; Amayrani Jared Arreguin, 25; and Yvette Gallegos, 23, all of Bakersfield. Lizette Mendez, 32, of Delano, and James Scott Gordon of Chico are also implicated. Randal Jason Newell, another co-defendant, already received a three-year, three-month prison sentence on March 29, 2022, for attempting to smuggle 111 pounds of methamphetamine across the border. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between a dizzying array of federal, state, and local agencies – including Homeland Security Investigations, the DEA, the U.S. Marshals, and even the Secret Service – is part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) program. This multi-agency approach targets the most dangerous criminal organizations operating within the United States.
Gonzalez is scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd on July 5, 2022, for sentencing. He could receive a life sentence and a $10 million fine. The final sentence will be determined based on statutory factors and federal sentencing guidelines. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher D. Baker and Laura J. Berger are prosecuting the case, aiming to dismantle this dangerous drug network one conviction at a time.
