POCATELLO, ID – Jack Edward Newsom, 43, of Pocatello, is headed for a long stretch behind bars after receiving a 121-month federal prison sentence for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Acting U.S. Attorney Justin Whatcott announced the sentencing today, a blow to the drug pipeline Newsom had been running in southeastern Idaho.
Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye didn’t show Newsom any leniency, tacking on five years of supervised release to the decade-plus prison term. The sentence follows a months-long investigation that uncovered a significant operation fueled by hard drugs. Newsom wasn’t just holding a little for personal use; this was a full-blown trafficking scheme.
The bust went down May 8, 2024, when law enforcement teams raided Newsom’s home and a fifth-wheel trailer he stashed in a storage facility. What they found wasn’t a weekend camping setup. Officers seized a combined 48.9 grams of fentanyl powder, a half-pound of methamphetamine from the residence, and a staggering pound of marijuana. The trailer yielded even more: another half-pound of methamphetamine, 79.6 grams of fentanyl powder, and 237 fentanyl pills. The sheer volume speaks to the scale of Newsom’s operation.
But the physical evidence only tells part of the story. Investigators revealed that, between February and April 2024, undercover officers purchased a total of three and a half pounds of methamphetamine directly from Newsom on five separate occasions. These weren’t one-off deals; they were consistent transactions proving a clear pattern of drug trafficking. Newsom thought he was selling to just anyone – he was wrong.
The successful prosecution was a team effort, lauded by Whatcott. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the BADGES Task Force played a critical role in dismantling Newsom’s network. BADGES, a federally funded High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) partnership, brings together the Drug Enforcement Administration, Idaho State Police, Pocatello Police Department, Chubbuck Police Department, and the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office. This wasn’t a single agency operation; it was a coordinated takedown.
The Oregon-Idaho HIDTA program provided crucial funding and resources for the investigation, demonstrating the importance of interagency cooperation in combating drug trafficking. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who profit from poisoning communities will face the full force of the law. Newsom’s days of dealing are over, and hopefully, this sends a message to others looking to follow in his footsteps.
