Berwick Man Charged with Heroin Trafficking

A 27-year-old man from Berwick, Pennsylvania, has been charged with distributing and possessing heroin with the intent to distribute. Edwin Vaquiz, a resident of Berwick, was arrested and arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge Karoline Mehalchick, who ordered him detained.

According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, the indictment charges Vaquiz with distributing heroin on January 22, 2016, and possessing over sixty grams of heroin (approximately 1,800 retail bags) with the intent to distribute on January 29, 2016, in the Berwick area.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Berwick Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sean A. Camoni.

The case is part of a district-wide initiative to combat the heroin epidemic in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, led by the United States Attorney’s Office and coordinated with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Indictments are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in court.

Vaquiz faces a maximum penalty of 20 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine, under federal law. The Federal Sentencing Guidelines also require the Judge to consider various factors before imposing a sentence.
