David DiPaolo, Manslaughter, Maryland 2014

Greenbelt, Maryland – A brutal crime has shaken the community in Carderock, an area within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. David DiPaolo, a 31-year-old man from Bristow, Virginia, is facing manslaughter charges in connection with the death of a climber on December 28, 2013.

According to the indictment and other court documents, DiPaolo allegedly killed the victim by repeatedly striking them in the head with a blunt object after arguing with them. The victim was found on a trail in Carderock with massive head injuries.

DiPaolo was arrested by New York State Police on January 8, 2014, and had an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Albany, New York. He was then transported to Maryland by U.S. Marshals.

The indictment was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein and Acting Chief of Police Robert MacLean of the U.S. Park Police.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.

DiPaolo faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter. His initial appearance is scheduled for today at 3:30 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles B. Day in Courtroom 2A, U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the U.S. Park Police for its work in the investigation and thanked the New York State Police, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York, and the U.S. Marshals Service for their assistance. Assistant United States Attorney Mara Zusman Greenberg is prosecuting the case.
