Child Pornography Distribution Lands Former Pediatric Oncology Resident in Prison

David H. Scanlan III, a former pediatric oncology resident at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for distributing child pornography. The prison term was imposed by U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Scanlan, who is currently residing in Bentonville, Virginia, also faces 20 years of supervised release following his prison term. In addition to his prison sentence, he was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $20,000.

According to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith, the government agreed to recommend the statutory mandatory minimum five-year prison sentence if Scanlan would submit to a polygraph examination on the issue of contact with minors. Scanlan underwent the examination and was found to be not deceptive, allowing the government to make the recommendation.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Jones found that the sentence called for under the advisory guideline range was not necessary in this case. The judge adopted the recommendation of the government and remanded Scanlan to the custody of the United States Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence immediately.

The investigation into Scanlan’s crimes was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney James Clancy.

Scanlan’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of child pornography and the importance of holding those who distribute it accountable. The conviction and sentence of Scanlan will undoubtedly bring relief to the victims of his crimes and serve as a warning to others who would engage in similar behavior.
