A brutal crime has left many searching for justice in the dark alleys of federal correctional institutions. David Lee Bishop, a 50-year-old inmate from Ocala, Florida, has been sentenced to life in prison for the second-degree murder of his cellmate at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex.
On February 3, 2019, Bishop strangled his cellmate to death using a torn bedsheet. In a chilling phone call to his mother shortly after the murder, Bishop revealed his guilt, stating “it was totally and utterly on purpose” and that he was “just waiting on them to find ‘it.’” When prison guards discovered the body, Bishop confessed to the crime without hesitation. At the time of the offense, Bishop was already serving a life sentence.
The disturbing case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorneys Belkis H. Crockett, Tyrie K. Boyer, Robert E. Bodnar, Jr., and Michael P. Felicetta led the prosecution, bringing Bishop to justice for his heinous crime.
Bishop’s plea agreement, entered on April 5, 2024, just three days before his federal jury trial was scheduled to begin, saved the court time and resources. The plea deal also ensured that Bishop would face the maximum sentence for his crime.
The Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, where the murder took place, is a maximum-security facility designed to house some of the most violent and hardened federal inmates. The fact that Bishop, already serving a life sentence, found a way to commit such a heinous crime raises questions about the effectiveness of the prison system in preventing violence behind bars.
The sentence handed down by Senior United States District Judge John Antoon II serves as a reminder that those who commit violent crimes in federal prisons will face severe consequences. Bishop’s life sentence will keep him behind bars for the rest of his days, a fitting punishment for his brutal crime.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates on any developments related to Bishop’s sentencing and the overall safety of federal correctional institutions.
