David Lee Rucker, Methamphetamine Possession with Intent to Distribute, Florida 2023

JACKSONVILLE, FL – David Lee Rucker, 35, of Clay County, Florida, is headed to federal prison for six years and eight months after pleading guilty to possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine. U.S. District Judge Maria M. Howard handed down the sentence Wednesday, also ordering Rucker to forfeit a loaded Taurus .40 caliber pistol and its ammunition.

The bust went down July 1, 2021, when Rucker allegedly picked up a “large quantity” of meth at a Clay County hotel. Before he could push the drugs, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) pulled him over. A subsequent search of Rucker’s vehicle and a pat-down revealed multiple baggies packed with methamphetamine, along with the aforementioned firearm. The details of the ‘large quantity’ weren’t disclosed, fueling speculation about the scale of Rucker’s operation.

Rucker entered a guilty plea on May 19, 2022, likely hoping for a lighter sentence. However, the judge clearly wasn’t swayed. The combination of hard drugs and a loaded weapon carried a hefty penalty, and Howard delivered. The ATF, the agency responsible for tracking firearms used in crime, played a key role in the investigation, highlighting the connection between drug trafficking and illegal gun possession.

The investigation was a joint effort between the CCSO, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Jacksonville Office, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. These agencies have been increasingly focused on disrupting the flow of narcotics and firearms in northeast Florida. The collaborative approach clearly paid off in this case, taking a dealer off the streets and a gun out of circulation.

Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein prosecuted the case, while Assistant United States Attorney Mai Tran handled the forfeiture proceedings. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, led by Roger B. Handberg, continues to prioritize federal drug and weapons prosecutions. The Tampa Field Division of the ATF oversaw the firearms aspect of the investigation.

While six years and eight months is a significant sentence, it remains to be seen if it will deter others from following in Rucker’s footsteps. The demand for methamphetamine continues to fuel a dangerous black market, and law enforcement faces a constant battle to stem the tide. The forfeited firearm will be examined for any links to other crimes, and the investigation remains open to explore any potential co-conspirators.
