David Phillips, Meth Trafficking, Paducah KY, 2023

PADUCAH, KY – David Phillips, 43, of Christian County, Kentucky, is headed to federal prison for a decade after being convicted of trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm. The sentence, handed down yesterday, also includes a five-year term of supervised release following his incarceration.

According to court documents, Phillips peddled methamphetamine on three separate occasions between June 7, 2021, and July 1, 2021. The bust culminated in a July 7, 2021, raid on his residence, where authorities discovered over 50 grams of methamphetamine, a substantial amount of cash, and a firearm. This wasn’t Phillips’ first brush with the law; he already had prior felony convictions for third-degree burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and first-degree methamphetamine trafficking.

“This guy wasn’t just selling drugs, he was armed while doing it,” stated U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky. “He’s a repeat offender and a danger to the community. We’re glad to see him off the streets for the next ten years.” The investigation was a collaborative effort between the ATF Bowling Green Field Office and the Christian County Sheriff’s Office.

ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge Robert Maynard of the Louisville Field Division emphasized the agency’s commitment to tackling armed drug traffickers. “Individuals like David Phillips put our communities at risk,” Maynard said. “This case demonstrates what we can accomplish when federal, state, and local law enforcement work together to identify, arrest, and convict those who threaten public safety.”

The substantial amount of methamphetamine seized – over 50 grams – points to a significant operation. While authorities haven’t released details on the scope of Phillips’ distribution network, the sheer quantity suggests he wasn’t simply a small-time dealer. The presence of a firearm further escalates the seriousness of the charges, raising concerns about potential violence associated with his activities.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Leigh Ann Dycus, working out of the Paducah Branch Office, successfully prosecuted the case. Phillips’ sentencing serves as a stark warning to others involved in the illicit drug trade: bringing poison into Kentucky communities and carrying firearms while doing so will result in serious federal consequences. The investigation underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and gun violence in the region.
