David Poirier, Firearms Theft, Massachusetts 2020

BOSTON – In a disturbing case of firearms theft, 26-year-old David Poirier of Agawam has been sentenced to three months in prison and three years of supervised release for stealing two firearms and trading them for drugs.

Poirier, a resident of Agawam, Massachusetts, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni to three months in prison and three years of supervised release, with the first two months to be served in home confinement. In December 2020, Poirier pleaded guilty to one count of theft of a firearm from a licensed firearms dealer and one count of possession, sale or disposal of a stolen firearm.

The crime took place between June 18 and 23, 2020, when Poirier stole a STI Edge 40 caliber pistol, a Glock 34 9 mm pistol, a Stag Arms Stag 15 lower frame and cash from a family member’s locked safe. The family member, who holds a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and owns a firearms business, was reportedly unaware of the theft.

Poirier then traded the stolen firearms for drugs. The exact nature of the drugs is not specified in the report. This reckless behavior put not only the community at risk but also the family member who unknowingly owned the stolen firearms.

Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, James Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boston Field Office, Colonel Christopher Mason, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, and Agawam Police Chief Eric Gillis made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle L. Dineen Jerrett of Mendell’s Criminal Division prosecuted the case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The PSN program was reinvigorated in 2017 as part of the renewed focus on targeting violent criminals.

The PSN program focuses on working with local communities to develop effective strategies to reduce violent crime. In this case, it helped bring Poirier to justice for his reckless actions.
