David Poitier Belton, Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine, California 2022

A California man ran a high-volume ice methamphetamine pipeline from Los Angeles to Cedar Rapids, flooding Iowa streets with 30- to 60-pound shipments for five years — until federal agents shut it down. David Poitier Belton, 37, from Compton, California, pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Known by the street alias “Blood,” Belton admitted in court he orchestrated the smuggling operation between 2017 and March 2022. He paid couriers to drive vehicles — often equipped with custom hidden compartments — packed with ice meth across state lines. Once deliveries hit Cedar Rapids, Belton or a trusted associate retrieved the drugs and funneled them through a network of dealers. In October 2020, law enforcement intercepted one of those vehicles on a car hauler bound for Iowa, seizing roughly 30 pounds of meth from a concealed compartment.

The DEA’s wiretap probe in late 2021 exposed the depth of Belton’s operation. Intercepted calls in February 2022 revealed plans for a 60-pound shipment. Agents tracked a rental truck from Los Angeles to Nebraska, where it was pulled over. Inside a plastic tote in the cargo area, officers found exactly 60 pounds of ice methamphetamine — a single load with street value in the millions.

Undeterred by the bust, Belton kept moving product. On February 27, 2022, investigators recorded him arranging for relative Kiyonte Sowell to fly from Los Angeles to Iowa with a suitcase full of drugs. “Pack you a big ass suitcase,” Belton said, “you already know what the rest is.” Sowell made it through airport security with a roller bag containing five vacuum-sealed bricks of ice meth. When confronted, Sowell shrugged: “It looks like cocaine or meth, I don’t know.” He added, “I’m going to jail.”

On March 8, 2022, federal agents raided Belton’s Cedar Rapids home. They found a stash of cocaine and 15 firearms. Belton, a twice-convicted felony burglar and prior drug dealer, is legally barred from owning guns. His status as a drug user compounded the weapons charge. He’s been locked up since his arrest.

Sentencing is pending before U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams after a presentence report. Belton faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, up to life, a $10,250,000 fine, and lifelong federal supervision. The case was led by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, with the DEA Cedar Rapids Task Force and FBI working in tandem to dismantle the ring. Belton remains in U.S. Marshal custody.
