David Tyler, Armed Carjacking, Jackson MS, 2021

JACKSON, MS – David Demazzio Tyler, 32, of Jackson, Mississippi, will spend over eleven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a particularly callous crime: the armed carjacking of an 81-year-old man in Clinton, Mississippi. The incident, which occurred on December 2, 2021, left the victim shaken but thankfully unharmed, though the psychological scars of such a violent encounter will likely linger.

According to court documents, Tyler approached the victim at gunpoint and forcibly stole his vehicle. The details of the carjacking paint a picture of brazen disregard for human life, a common thread in the rising tide of violent crime gripping communities across the nation. While the stolen vehicle was recovered, the emotional toll on the victim is immeasurable. Tyler ultimately pled guilty to the charges on January 5, 2023.

U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca announced the sentencing, stating that Tyler received 57 months for the carjacking itself and an additional 84 months for brandishing a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, totaling 141 months – or 11 years and 9 months – in federal prison. This sentence sends a clear message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Clinton Police Department, and the Jackson Police Department. Special Agent in Charge Kurt Thielhorn of the ATF emphasized the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling violent crime. “These partnerships are crucial to disrupting criminal activity and bringing perpetrators like Tyler to justice,” he stated.

Assistant United States Attorney Jessica S. Terrill successfully prosecuted the case, navigating the complexities of federal law and securing a significant sentence. The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The DOJ launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on trust-building, community support, strategic enforcement, and measurable results.

While this sentence offers a measure of justice for the victim, it’s a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by elderly citizens and the ever-present threat of violent crime. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor federal prosecutions and expose the underbelly of criminal activity, holding perpetrators accountable and demanding safer streets for all.
