The grim streets of Albuquerque are set to witness a historic moment as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announces its groundbreaking 360 Strategy to combat the city’s spiraling heroin and prescription drug epidemic. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Sean R. Waite will lead the charge at a press conference scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 17, 2017.
This innovative approach is designed to address the multifaceted nature of the crisis with a three-pronged strategy. The DEA’s 360 Strategy targets drug trafficking organizations at all levels, collaborates with manufacturers, practitioners, and pharmacists to promote responsible prescribing practices, and engages local communities in the fight against opioid abuse.
Assistant Special Agent Waite will be joined by an array of distinguished partners including Acting U.S. Attorney James D. Tierney, Executive Vice Chancellor Richard Larson of the UNM Health Sciences Center, Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins, and City Councilor Diane E. Gibson. The event, which will take place at the Boys and Girls Club of New Mexico, 3333 Truman Ave. NE, is open to media with valid credentials.
The rollout of the DEA’s 360 Strategy in Albuquerque comes as part of an ongoing collaboration with local authorities under the New Mexico Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative. Launched in January 2015, HOPE seeks to protect communities from the dangers associated with opioids, reduce overdose deaths, and implement comprehensive strategies for prevention, treatment, law enforcement, reentry, and strategic planning.
As the seventh city selected to participate in the DEA’s 360 Strategy, Albuquerque joins a list of cities committed to tackling the opioid crisis from all angles. The HOPE Initiative has been at the forefront of this battle, working with the DEA to provide vital resources and support to those affected by drug abuse.
