Baltimore, MD – In a devastating blow to the notorious Dead Man Incorporated gang, James Sweeney, its founder and former Supreme D, has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in a violent racketeering enterprise. Sweeney, 36, was convicted of conspiracy to participate in the gang’s activities, which included murder, assault, and drug smuggling.
According to court documents, Sweeney was a key figure in the gang’s expansion from a prison gang in Maryland to a larger, more violent organization with members outside of prison. He admitted to ordering numerous ‘hits’ and participating in the smuggling of drugs into prisons, including heroin, powder and crack cocaine, marijuana, and prescription drugs.
The sentence was imposed on February 25, 2013, by U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone in the Eastern District of Texas, where Sweeney is currently serving a 30-year Maryland sentence for a 1996 second-degree murder conviction. Federal prosecutors in Texas dismissed an indictment charging Sweeney with the murder of an inmate at the federal prison in Beaumont, Texas.
Sweeney’s co-defendant, Perry Roark, also known as ‘Rock,’ ‘Pops,’ ‘Slim,’ and ‘Saho the Ghost,’ was previously sentenced to life in prison for his role in the racketeering conspiracy. Roark had been the Supreme Commander of DMI since its creation in 2000.
U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the FBI, ATF, Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, and local law enforcement agencies for their assistance in the investigation and prosecution of Sweeney and DMI members.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert R. Harding and Christopher J. Romano, who commended the work of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force in bringing the notorious gang to justice.
Dead Man Incorporated, known for its violent tactics and expansion beyond prison walls, has been dismantled, and its leaders held accountable for their crimes. The sentence serves as a warning to other violent gangs operating in the shadows, that law enforcement will pursue and prosecute those responsible for the harm caused to our communities.
