Rock Island Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Armed Bank Robberies
Rock Island, IL – In a shocking turn of events, Deangelo Dixon, 28, of Rock Island, IL, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for committing two armed bank robberies.
The crimes took place on November 8, 2012, at Union Federal Savings & Loan in Viola, IL, and December 10, 2012, at the 1st Community Bank in Sherrard, IL.
According to court documents, Dixon entered the banks wearing black and a mask, and used threatening behavior to demand money from tellers.
At the Union Federal Savings & Loan, Dixon grabbed a teller by the collar, put a round hard object against her neck, and demanded money, threatening to shoot her.
He made off with $30,994 before fleeing the scene.
At the 1st Community Bank, Dixon pointed a firearm-like object, later determined to be a butane lighter, at tellers and demanded money, threatening to shoot.
He grabbed a teller and forced her to remove $5,710 from teller drawers, and then punched another teller in the face when she tried to escape.
The evidence presented in court established that Dixon had a history of robbery offenses, including two prior convictions in Illinois courts.
As a result, U.S. District Judge Sara L. Darrow found that Dixon was a recidivist violent offender, as defined in the federal 3-Strikes law, and mandated a term of life imprisonment.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Don Allegro and Kirk Schuler prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, the Viola Police Department, the Rock Island Police Department, and the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The sentencing marks a major victory for law enforcement in the fight against violent crime in Illinois.
