Brandishing a Firearm Lands Young Man Behind Bars
In a brazen display of violence, 20-year-old Dedrick Bufkin of Merrillville, Indiana, was sentenced to 60 months imprisonment for brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
According to court documents, Bufkin was part of a group led by Diamond Toney, who met a victim through a dating website. Toney and Bufkin met the victim at an arranged site, where they tied him up with string and duct tape and ordered him into the trunk of his own vehicle.
The group then took money, a cell phone, and wallet from the victim and held him captive in the trunk for approximately 5 hours before releasing him. This heinous crime was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation GRIT Task Force.
Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Chang-Adiga prosecuted the case, which highlights the dangers of online relationships and the importance of vigilance in today’s digital age.
The sentence handed down by District Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen is a stark reminder that those who commit such crimes will face severe consequences. Bufkin’s 60 months imprisonment and 2 years of supervised release serve as a warning to would-be perpetrators that they will be held accountable for their actions.
The case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in protecting the public and bringing perpetrators to justice.
In a statement, the United States Attorney’s Office commended the bravery of the victim and the dedication of the FBI GRIT Task Force in solving the case.
