Tampa, Florida – A Despicable Crime
A Sarasota man has pleaded guilty to leaving a threatening voicemail targeting a Jewish organization in New York.
Deep Alpesh Kumar Patel, 21, appeared in court and admitted to leaving a disturbing message on October 21, 2023. The threatening voicemail was filled with expletives and included a chilling threat to ‘kill every single one of you Israelis’ and perpetuate ‘mass genocide of every single Israeli.’
Patel also confessed to leaving a similar threatening voicemail at a synagogue in Temple Terrace, Florida, on the same day. The messages were laced with hate speech and were intended to cause harm to the targeted individuals.
According to the plea agreement, Patel intentionally selected Jewish and/or Israeli individuals as the objects of his threat based on their actual or perceived race, religion, national origin, or ethnicity.
This heinous crime was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Patel faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
Assistant United States Attorney Risha Asokan is prosecuting the case.
