ORLANDO, FL – In a shocking case of deception, a 62-year-old man from Oviedo has been found guilty of defrauding the Social Security Administration.
Craig DeMange, a resident of Oviedo, was convicted by a federal jury on charges of knowingly and willfully making a false statement to a federal agency. The maximum penalty for this crime is five years in federal prison.
DeMange’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 23, 2017.
A 20-year history of deceitful behavior led to DeMange’s downfall. The Social Security Administration requested information about his work and earnings history in July 2013 to assess his continued eligibility for disability benefits. However, DeMange knowingly and willfully provided false and fraudulent information about his current work status.
Specifically, DeMange stated that he had not worked since 1996, when in fact he had been running a business since 2010 or 2011.
This case was investigated by the Social Security Administration – Office of the Inspector General. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily C. L. Chang.
DeMange’s actions not only damaged the integrity of the system but also resulted in financial losses for the Social Security Administration.
The indictment against DeMange was handed down on June 15, 2016, marking the beginning of the end for his deceitful scheme.
