Demery Bernard McLymore, Carjacking, North Carolina 2016

Demery Bernard McLymore, 26, of Roseboro, North Carolina, is headed to federal prison for 372 months after a violent, hours-long crime spree that terrorized a dozen victims across Sampson County. McLymore was sentenced today following a February jury conviction on four counts: carjacking, possession of a firearm in furtherance of carjacking, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.

The rampage began the evening of September 3, 2016, when McLymore and accomplice Ambrose Lassiter ambushed six teenage boys who had just parked at the Brantwood Court apartments in Roseboro. Armed with a silver handgun, McLymore ordered the group—none older than 18—out of their vehicle. He pressed the gun to one boy’s neck, threatened two others at gunpoint, and stole a few dollars, a cell phone, and one victim’s shoes. He then forced the driver to take him and Lassiter to Clinton, riding shotgun with the weapon visible in his lap.

Within hours, McLymore was back on the move. In Clinton’s “the Block” neighborhood, he approached a woman walking down the street, revealed the handgun, and marched her into her own apartment. There, he robbed the resident of a wristwatch before she managed to flee through the front door. Minutes later, McLymore showed up at the Spirit convenience store parking lot, where he conned two young men into giving him a ride to his girlfriend’s house. Once there, he claimed to have lost a pistol, then seized a shotgun from the truck’s rack and turned it on both men.

With the stolen shotgun in hand, McLymore forced the passenger to walk with him down the road. He soon spotted two boys, ages 13 and 16, and advanced on them, leveling the shotgun at their chins and chests. He ordered the truck passenger to search the boys’ pockets. Finding little, he then commanded the teens to strip down to their underwear before fleeing back toward his girlfriend’s residence.

Clinton Police, already investigating the earlier robbery, received a tip and tracked McLymore to the bedroom of that home. Officers found him in possession of a wristwatch, wadded-up cash, a shotgun shell, and more than three dozen .380 caliber bullets. Behind the house, they recovered the stolen shotgun, loaded with three shells matching the one in his pocket. The weapon and evidence sealed his fate at trial.

“Demery McLymore was a one man crime wave,” said Mr. Higdon. “And he is just the kind of offender that we are Taking Back North Carolina from as part of our initiative to rid our communities of those individuals who make them unsafe. We are gratified by the sentence the Court imposed today because every day McLymore spends in prison is a safer day in the streets of the Eastern District.” The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative targeting violent offenders in high-crime areas.
