Iowa Felon Sentenced for Gun Crime
A shocking case of gun crime has left authorities stunned as Dennis Lee Kaplan, a 41-year-old man from Shellsburg, Iowa, has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm after pointing it at his girlfriend and discharging it in her presence.
According to court records, Kaplan, a four-time felon, pleaded guilty to a single count of Indictment charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm on January 15, 2015.
The crime, which took place on August 21, 2014, involved Kaplan pointing a loaded shotgun at his girlfriend and then discharging a single shell outside the door of their residence. The court noted the many aggravating risk factors in this case, including placing not only himself but others at risk.
Kaplan’s sentence was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids. In addition to his 46 months’ imprisonment, Kaplan was also ordered to pay a special assessment of $100 and serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Steve Young and investigated by the Vinton Iowa Police Department. Kaplan is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
