A Timber Lake man has been brought to justice for attempting to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at a local bar.
According to prosecutors, Dennis Tyler Gutierrez, a/k/a ‘Crow Shoe’, age 21, used a counterfeit bill to attempt to buy beer at the Coop Bar during the Days of 1910 celebration in July 2013.
The owner of the Coop Bar recognized the bill as counterfeit and called law enforcement, leading to Gutierrez’s arrest.
Gutierrez was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 21, 2013, and pleaded guilty on October 1, 2013.
On December 12, 2013, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Gutierrez to one year of probation, a $500 fine, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The conviction was the result of a joint investigation by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Secret Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuting the case.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant when it comes to counterfeit bills and the consequences of attempting to pass them.
