Kristi Ayn Liebau Sentenced to 4 Years for Healthcare Fraud, Erie P…

ERIE, Pa. – In a stunning turn of events, Kristi Ayn Liebau, 40, a dentist with ties to Sugar Land, Texas and Fairview, Pennsylvania, has been handed down a four-year sentence for her involvement in a $288,528.89 healthcare fraud scheme.

The sentencing was announced by United States Attorney David J. Hickton, who revealed that Liebau was sentenced to 4 months imprisonment, followed by an additional 8 months of home detention under electronic monitoring. The former dentist also faces three years of supervised release and has been ordered to make restitution to United Healthcare Community Plan of Pennsylvania.

According to the court records, from January 2008 through March 2011, Dr. Liebau engaged in a variety of fraudulent activities. She submitted false claims to various healthcare benefit programs by billing for different procedures than those actually performed, up-coding claims, billing for unnecessary procedures, and claiming services on non-existent teeth. Her actions were so flagrant that she even billed for an exorbitant number of procedures that could not have been performed within the allotted surgery time.

Judge Sean J. McLaughlin imposed the sentence with a clear intent to serve as a deterrent against other healthcare professionals who might consider using their positions to commit fraud. The judge emphasized, “This sentence should send a strong message to those who think they can exploit their professions for personal gain.”

Assistant United States Attorney Marshall J. Piccinini successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. U.S. Attorney Hickton also commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General for their diligent work in bringing Liebau to justice.

The sentence imposed on Kristi Ayn Liebau serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in fraudulent activities within the healthcare industry.
