Anel Del Carmen Zapata Polanco, a 42-year-old Dominican national, was arrested for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. Zapata, who has a history of convictions for possession of a forged instrument and conspiracy to distribute heroin, was taken into custody after being released from state prison. The arrest occurred on the same day, after he had been sentenced to 10 years for drug and firearm offenses in New Haven and six years for firearm possession and threatening offenses in Middletown.
Zapata’s criminal history dates back to 2006, when he was convicted in New York County Criminal Court of possession of a forged instrument. He was sentenced to time served for the offense. In 2016, he was convicted in the U.S. District Court of the District of New Jersey of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin and sentenced to 57 months in prison. After serving his sentence, Zapata was removed to the Dominican Republic in 2017.
Despite being deported, Zapata managed to reenter the United States and continued his life of crime. His recent convictions in Connecticut Superior Courts in New Haven and Middletown demonstrate his disregard for the law and his tendency to engage in violent and drug-related activities. Zapata’s arrest and potential 20-year prison sentence serve as a warning to those who would attempt to reenter the country illegally and continue their criminal ways.
Zapata appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert A. Richardson in Hartford and was ordered detained. The case is being investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and Zapata’s prosecution will be handled by the same office. If convicted, Zapata faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years for the charge of unlawful reentry.
