MIAMI – In a landmark case, a Minneapolis jury delivered a guilty verdict against former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd, a Black man whose death sparked widespread protests and calls for justice.

Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty of all three counts: second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The jury deliberated for approximately 10 hours before delivering the verdict on April 20, 2021.

The trial, which began on March 29, 2021, was closely watched by the nation and the international community. The conviction was seen as a significant step towards accountability for police brutality, a long-standing issue in the United States.

As Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Juan Antonio Gonzalez released a statement following the verdict, expressing his condolences to George Floyd’s family and praising the jury’s decision.

Gonzalez stated, ‘Today, a Minneapolis jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering George Floyd. While no verdict can bring Mr. Floyd back to his family, I pray that today’s decision brings them a measure of peace and all people a renewed faith in our justice system.’

Gonzalez also emphasized the ongoing federal civil rights investigation into the death of George Floyd, led by the U.S. Department of Justice, which is still pending.
