Derek Jon Paddy, Home Invasion, Minnesota 2018

Four Bemidji residents have been sentenced for their roles in a brazen home invasion on the Red Lake Reservation in November 2017. The victims, who wish to remain anonymous, were left shaken after the perpetrators broke into their home in the early morning hours of November 24, 2017.

According to court documents, Derek Jon Paddy, 22, of Bemidji, Minn., was sentenced to 29 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years supervised release, for his role in the burglary. Paddy pleaded guilty to one count of burglary in the second degree on August 31, 2018.

Paddy and his accomplices, Kevin Robertson, 32, Cherai Michelle Clark, 26, and Shanise Frances Ostlund, 29, all of Bemidji, Minn., had driven together to the victim’s residence after a brawl at a local Walmart store. The defendants kicked in the front door and entered the residence, only to find that the victim had escaped by jumping out of a window.

Robertson and Ostlund were found guilty of burglary in the second degree and robbery following a jury trial on September 12, 2018. Robertson was sentenced to 51 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years supervised release, for his role in the crime. Ostlund, on the other hand, received 3 years probation.

Clark was also sentenced to 21 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years supervised release, for her role in the burglary. All four defendants were sentenced by Judge Susan Richard Nelson on December 3, 2018, in U.S. District Court in Duluth, Minnesota.

U.S. Attorney Erica H. MacDonald praised the work of the FBI Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force, the Red Lake Police Department, and the Bemidji Police Department, who investigated the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to ensuring that all communities have the opportunity to be safe.

The case highlights the importance of community safety and the need for robust law enforcement efforts to hold perpetrators accountable for their crimes.

The defendants’ actions were a clear violation of the victim’s rights and property, and it is only fitting that they face the consequences of their actions.
