Fatal Consequences: A San Diego man has been sentenced to 97 months in prison for his role in selling fentanyl pills to a 27-year-old woman who fatally overdosed in 2022.
Derek Neal Turfler, 29, of San Diego, was sentenced in federal court on February 5, 2024, for distributing fentanyl that resulted in the death of Faithe Sioban Thogode, a 27-year-old woman who had just celebrated five years of sobriety at a drug and alcohol treatment center.
According to his plea agreement, Turfler arranged a meeting to deliver fentanyl to the victim on May 9, 2022, and the victim died later that morning after using the fentanyl he provided.
Turfler was on formal probation for a 2019 California state court conviction of driving under the influence of fentanyl and causing great bodily harm at the time of the incident.
The U.S. Attorney’s office and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Overdose Response Team led the investigation into Thogode’s death, which is part of ongoing efforts to investigate and prosecute the distribution of illegal drugs that results in overdose deaths.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick C. Swan.
