Dereon Equwan Davenport, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Iowa 2022

A Waterloo man has been sentenced to two additional years in federal prison for possessing a firearm less than a year after he was released from federal prison for a similar crime.

Dereon Equwan Davenport, also known as Dereon Galloway, was sentenced to 33 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon on March 18, 2022.

The 33-month sentence consists of 21 months for the new firearms conviction and a consecutive 12 months for violating the terms of his supervised release in his 2019 firearms case.

Davenport was convicted in 2019 of possession of a firearm by a drug user and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He was released from custody in December 2020 and was on supervised release at the time of his arrest in July 2021.

During a traffic stop in Waterloo, a loaded, chambered firearm was found in a pocket in Davenport’s pants. He was also charged with harassing a public official and driving while under suspension in November 2021.

Davenport must also serve a new three-year term of supervised release after the prison term imposed in the new case. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Timothy L. Vavricek and investigated by the Waterloo Police Department.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
