BREAKING: Local Man Lands 5-Year Prison Sentence for Arming Himself in Drug Deal Gone Wrong.
FRESNO, Calif. – Derrick Gage, a 42-year-old Bakersfield man, has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance a Drug Trafficking Offense, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
A loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and cocaine were seized by law enforcement officers at the Plaza Motel on Union Avenue in Bakersfield on April 23, 2022. Gage is prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior felony convictions for domestic violence, participation in a criminal street gang, and sales of cocaine.
This case is the result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Bakersfield Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin J. Gilio and Laurel J. Montoya took on the prosecution.
Gage’s sentence is a stark reminder of the dire consequences of combining firearms and illicit substances. In this case, his possession of a firearm led to a 5-year prison term.
