Derrick Gilliam, 30, of Bridgeport, is headed to federal prison for more than a decade after a violent armed robbery spree terrorized small businesses across Connecticut in 2014. U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly confirmed today that Gilliam was sentenced to 121 months in prison by Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence marks the end of a criminal run that left employees shaken and communities on edge.
Gilliam didn’t act alone. He teamed up with Lancelot Supersad and, later, Anthony Santiago in a series of brazen daylight heists. On April 26, 2014, the crew hit the CVS Pharmacy on Grasmere Avenue in Fairfield, making off with $2,376. Less than a week later, they targeted a Mobil Gas station on Noble Avenue in Bridgeport—this time, the job went sideways, ending in a failed robbery attempt. But they didn’t slow down.
On May 10, they struck a Webster Bank branch on Main Street in Bridgeport, grabbing $4,170. The violence escalated with each job. Gilliam repeatedly brandished what appeared to be a handgun, pointing it at terrified employees during every one of the seven robberies. On June 1, they robbed a Pizza Hut on Boston Avenue, stealing $250. Six weeks later, they hit the Residence Inn on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton, taking $200 in cash.
July 2, 2014, was their deadliest day. First, they attempted to rob the Sikorsky Financial Credit Union on Oronoque Lane in Stratford. When that didn’t go as planned, they moved fast—within hours, they stormed the TD Bank on Post Road East in Westport, successfully looting the branch. The pattern was clear: fast, armed, and reckless.
Gilliam has been locked up since his arrest on July 3, 2014. On July 28, 2016, he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to affect commerce by robbery. Chief Judge Hall ordered him to pay $12,100 in restitution to the victims. His co-defendants, Lancelot Supersad and Anthony Santiago, have also pleaded guilty to the same charge and are awaiting sentencing.
The FBI led the investigation alongside local police departments from Westport, Shelton, Fairfield, Stratford, and Bridgeport. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Douglas P. Morabito and Avi M. Perry prosecuted the case, ensuring that Gilliam wouldn’t walk free. With federal time and no room for appeal, his crime spree is over—for good.
