San Carlos Man Sentenced to 18.5 Years for Aggravated Sexual Abuse
PHOENIX, AZ – In a disturbing case of abuse of power, Derrick Lee Hinton, 29, of San Carlos, Arizona, has been sentenced to 18.5 years in prison for the aggravated sexual abuse of a vulnerable victim.
On May 31, 2013, Hinton, an enrolled member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, committed the heinous crime against a mentally-challenged victim, who is also an enrolled member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the San Carlos Police Department, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Simon, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
Hinton had previously pleaded guilty to the crime, which led to the sentencing by U.S. District Judge David C. Campbell on February 4, 2019.
