NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – A brazen mail theft scheme has been brought to justice, with a New Orleans man sentenced to time behind bars.
DERRICK LEWIS, 23, was handed a 9-month sentence by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey on January 16, 2024. This punishment comes after Lewis pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Steal United States Mail and Possession of Stolen Mail.
According to court records, Lewis conspired with others to steal mail from both the Lakeview Post Office in New Orleans and United States Postal Service (USPS) mailboxes located in Metairie. The scheme involved Lewis acting as the driver and another defendant using a stolen USPS key to steal mail from the two locations.
A police chase ensued, and Lewis and the co-defendant were found in possession of approximately 30 pieces of stolen mail.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the United States Postal Inspection Service – Office of the Inspector General, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in investigating this matter. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon Maestri of the General Crimes Unit is in charge of the prosecution.
The sentence also includes 3 years of supervised release and a $200 mandatory special assessment fee.
Lewis’s guilty plea and subsequent sentencing mark a victory for law enforcement and a warning to those who would seek to exploit the mail system.
As the people of New Orleans can attest, the U.S. Attorney’s Office remains committed to protecting the community and holding accountable those who break the law.
