A Louisiana man has been locked up for possessing a firearm as an undocumented immigrant.
Jorge Eduardo Vallejo, 37, a Honduran national, was sentenced to 10 months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release. Vallejo will then be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal proceedings.
As reported by court records, on July 12, 2014, Vallejo was discovered with a SCCY Model CPX-2, 9mm semi-automatic pistol, despite being an alien illegally in the United States.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite commended the efforts of Homeland Security Investigations in investigating this case, hailing it as a major success.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis handled the prosecution, securing a guilty plea from Vallejo.
According to U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown, Vallejo’s actions were a serious offense that warranted a harsher sentence.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal gun laws.
